The object of the Commission is the preparedness of civilisation for 00:00:00 on 1 January 10000, and for no earlier hour. (Constitution, Article II.)
At 23:59:59 on 31 December 9999, every four-digit year field in production use will be asked to hold a number it cannot hold. Approximately 7,974 years remain. The Commission regards this as sufficient, provided no quarter is wasted.
RFC 2550, Y10K and Beyond (1 April 1999), remains the earliest standards-track treatment of dates beyond the year 9999. The date system of Microsoft Excel ends at 31 December 9999, which it formats correctly; the following day cannot be represented. The Long Now Foundation has written the year with five digits since 01996. The Unix time_t rollover of 19 January 2038 is noted, and is a matter for bodies with shorter horizons.
